DAY 1 London - Stratford - Coventry - Wedgwood - Harrogate A warm welcome from our Tour Director this morning as we drive past the Cotswold Hills to Stratford-upon-Avon. Here we visit Shakespeare's birthplace and drive past Anne Hathaway's cottage. We continue to Coventry, home of Lady Godiva, to see the two Cathedrals. Next we visit the famous Wedgwood Pottery Centre with time to purchase some fine china. Finally, off to the spa-town of Harrogate where we enjoy a welcome drink with our Tour Director before dinner tonight. (D) DAY 2 Harrogate - York - Durham - Edinburgh (2) Our day begins in Viking York where we enjoy a walking tour with our Tour Director through the medieval streets to the 'Shambles' and the gothic Minster. Then, we're off to Durham, which is dominated by its 12th century Norman Cathedral. Next we drive through the Northumberland National Park, past the ruins of Hadrian's Wall and across the Scottish border where we see the famous Jedburgh Abbey en route to Edinburgh, Scotland's elegant capital. (FB) DAY 3 Edinburgh sightseeing & at leisure We visit Edinburgh Castle and see Holyrood House, once home of Mary Queen of Scots, on our morning sightseeing tour. Then enjoy some time on your own to perhaps take an optional excursion and shop along Princes Street for tweeds and tartans. During the Festival, we include tickets to the spectacular Edinburgh Tattoo. This evening, why not join your travelling companions and try some Scottish cuisine and entertainment? (FB) DAY 4 Edinburgh - St. Andrews - Aviemore After breakfast today, we will drive towards the Fife coast to St. Andrews, home of the famous golf course. Next we continue our journey over the River Tay, through Dundee and Perth to Pitlochry. From here we cross rugged, heather clad scenery to the Highland town of Aviemore for dinner and overnight stay. (FB D) DAY 5 Aviemore - Loch Ness - Glasgow This morning we drive via the magnificent but mournful scenery of Culloden before continuing to Loch Ness and on to Fort William glimpsing the imposing peak of Ben Nevis – Britain's highest mountain. Then on through Glencoe to the shores of Loch Lomond en route to Glasgow for the night. (FB) DAY 6 Glasgow - Grasmere - Preston Today we will drive through the Southern Uplands past Moffat to Gretna Green. Here eloping couples married against their parents' wishes, we will stop to attend a clandestine wedding ceremony! From here we drive back into England making a stop in Grasmere, home of the poet William Wordsworth. The breathtaking scenery enthralls us on our journey to Preston for the night. (FB D) DAY 7 Preston - Chester - Tintern - Bristol This morning after breakfast our first stop will be at Chester where we admire the architecture of the galleried 'Rows'. From here we cross into Wales and the Wye Valley to view the ruins of the 12th century Tintern Abbey. Finally, we continue to Bristol where tonight we will enjoy dinner in a characteristic restaurant. (FB) (HD) DAY 8 Bristol - Bath - Stonehenge - Salisbury - London We make our way to the beautiful city of Bath this morning. On our arrival we will enjoy views of its superb Georgian architecture as well as make a visit to the Roman Baths. From here we continue our journey across Salisbury Plain making a stop to visit the ancient monoliths at Stonehenge. Later, we visit Salisbury with time for views of its impressive Cathedral before we carry on through Wiltshire and Hampshire back to London. (FB) |
