DAY 1 Arrive Lisbon On arrival in Lisbon you are met and transferred to your hotel. Time to relax and perhaps explore the area around Rossio Square before meeting with your Tour Director and fellow travellers for a welcome drink. Your Tour Director can advise you on the best place to go for dinner this evening! DAY 2 Lisbon - Albufeira (2) After breakfast this morning our day will start as we cross the River Tagus along the Bridge of the 25th April, recalling the 1974 Revolution, and head toward the Serra Arrabida Mountains. On the road to the Algarve we drive to the Valley of the River Sado en route to Albufeira on the Algarve for two relaxing nights. This evening, we will enjoy Portuguese specialities at dinner in a specially selected local restaurant. (BB) (HD) DAY 3 Algarve Excursion Enjoy a drive along the Algarve to the Sagres Peninsula. Here we admire the view across the wild beauty of Baleeira Beach and continue to Cape St. Vincent. Later, we return to our hotel via the pretty resort of Lagos, where henry the Navigator set sail to discover the New World. With the afternoon at leisure perhaps relax before trying out some local fish in one of the seaside restaurants. (BB) DAY 4 Albufeira - Evora Today we journey cross the Serra de Caldeirao and the towns of Castro Verde and Beja. On to Evora - Portugal's most vibrant town in the medieval and Renaissance period. Here we visit the gothic Cathedral, the macabre Ossuary Chapel, the Roman Temple and the quaint Rua 5 de Outubro. Later, enjoy time on your own. (BB D) DAY 5 Evora - Castelo de Vide - Belmonte - Viseu First we drive to the small town of Castelo de Vide, with time to wander through the narrow alleys and explore the Jewish quarter. Then across the Valley of the River Tagus towards the Serra da Estrela mountains and Belmonte. On arrival we'll see its old Roman Tower before we continue via Guarda to Viseu, in the region of the famous Dao vineyards. Perhaps explore the old town after dinner at our hotel this evening. (BB D) DAY 6 Viseu - Mateus - Guimaraes - Oporto (2) We travel to the Douro Valley, where the world-famous port wines are produced. Then we visit the gardens of the Palacio de Mateus, depicted on the label of Mateus wine bottles before we travel through the province of Tras-os-Montes. Next, we head to Guimarães where we see the square towers of Guimarães' castle. From here we make our way to Oporto for two nights. (BB D) DAY 7 Oporto sightseeing & at leisure Today's morning sightseeing tour shows us the remarkable bridges across the Douro River plus the Vila Nova de Gaia wine stores. We will also see the baroque church of St. Francis and visit the Stock Exchange with its Arabian Hall and continue to one of the port cellars for wine-tasting. This afternoon, perhaps take a cruise along the Douro River. Then this evening, why not try out some local specialities in one of the harbour restaurants? (BB) DAY 8 Oporto - Coimbra - Conimbriga - Tomar - Santarem We will travel on to the province of Bairrada, driving through the Bucaco National Park. Then on to Coimbra, with its ancient streets and squares. Here we visit its Old University and the ornate baroque library (when the library is closed we'll visit the Ceremonial Hall). Next we continue to the excavations of the old Roman town of Conimbriga, to visit the museum with its exhibits of ceramics and mosaics. From here we head to Tomar, to visit the Convent of Christ, before our final stop for the day at our hotel in Santarem. (BB D) DAY 9 Santarem - Fatima - Lisbon (2) Our first stop this morning is at the pilgrimage site of Fatima where we visit the Basilica at the spot where the three young shepherds saw the apparition of the Virgin. Time at leisure, then on to Batalha with a visit to the monastery, a 'must-see'. Next on to the coast and the fishing village of Nazare. En route to Lisbon, we'll pause at medieval Obidos, a fortified city once on the seashore, but now 6 miles inland! This evening, why not dine on local specialties whilst listening to haunting Fado melodies along the Bairro Alto? (BB) DAY 10 Lisbon sightseeing & at leisure This morning we will visit the medieval quarter, Vasco de Gama's Tomb inside the Hieronymite Monastery and admire views of the Belem Tower and the monument to the Discoverers on our sightseeing tour. Later, with time at leisure perhaps visit nearby Cascais to shop for cork and fishermen's sweaters and then visit medieval Sintra and its Royal palace. This evening you may wish to join us to discover yet another historical quarter of Lisbon and enjoy a final evening of Portuguese cuisine. (BB) DAY 11 Depart Lisbon After breakfast there's time to bid farewell to this beautiful country and new-found friends as we transfer to the airport for our return flight home. (BB) |
