Tour Itinerary Visiting some of the most scenic areas of Britain at a pace that suits you best! This tour has been expertly planned so that the travelling days between London, Bath, Windermere and Edinburgh feature regular stops at places of interest - so you are never too long on the coach. In all centres, you will enjoy all the major sights, such as the Roman Baths, Windermere Lake and Edinburgh Castle, but still have plenty of extra time to explore on your own. With so much leisure time, centrally located hotels are an essential feature of this tour! DAY 1 SUN - LONDON - BATH A warm welcome from our Tour Director this morning before we drive along the Thames Valley to Runnymede, where King John signed the Magna Carta. We see the John F. Kennedy Memorial before continuing to Windsor, enjoying fine views of the castle as we approach the town. After some time to explore, we head to Oxford, site of England's oldest university. Now an enchanting drive into the Cotswolds to Bourton-on-the-Water, where the river Windrush flows through the middle of the village amid lush green lawns. Finally, we continue to the Georgian city of Bath. Hotel: Francis. (D) DAY 2 MON - BATH AT LEISURE This morning we commence our tour of the city, visiting the ancient Roman Baths, and Georgian Pump Rooms. Our tour will also show us the impressive Royal Crescent, built in the town's Georgian heyday, the elegant Pulteney Bridge and the 16th century Abbey. This afternoon we are at leisure to explore this graceful city and its elegant shops. (B) DAY 3 TUE - BATH - LAKE DISTRICT We head north today through the heart of England to the stately town of Worcester, where the 11th century cathedral rises impressively above the banks of the river Severn. Worcester is noted for it's fine porcelain and we continue this theme at our next stop - the Wedgwood Pottery Centre. Later this afternoon we take the smooth motorway north to the Lake District. Hotel: Windermere Hydro. (B,D) DAY 4 WED - LAKE DISTRICT AT LEISURE A day to relax and explore the Lake District - a scenic wonderland of rugged mountains, tranquil waters and an inspiration to English poets. We visit Wordsworth's home village of Grasmere, then admire the vast expanse of Windermere, largest of the lakes. Perhaps even take a cruise on its lucid waters, before returning to our hotel? (B) DAY 5 THU - LAKE DISTRICT AT LEISURE Another day to relax in these peaceful surroundings and follow the advice of Wordsworth: 'I sit upon this old grey stone, and dream my time away'! (B) DAY 6 FRI - LAKE DISTRICT - EDINBURGH Our first stop is at Hadrian's Wall, one of Britain's most impressive Roman monuments. We pause for a photo opportunity at Birdoswald, passing the beautiful Lanercost Priory. We continue north through the Southern Uplands to the famous Tweed Valley. The area is rich in medieval abbeys, victims to English invasions - we will stop to see ruined Melrose Abbey, perhaps the most beautiful of all. Now on to stately Edinburgh. Hotel: The Holyrood. (B) DAY 7 SAT - EDINBURGH SIGHTSEEING Today our local guide shows us the glory of the 'Athens of the North'. We drive along Prince's Street to see the Scott Memorial, and visit the 18th century 'New Town' with its classical Adam facades. Now into the Old Town, to visit the imposing Castle perched on its rock. We follow the Royal Mile past the Palace of Holyroodhouse where Mary Queen of Scots lived - it is still the official Scottish residence of the Queen. The rest of the day is at leisure. (This evening selected departures enjoy the Military Tattoo – a colourful mixture of military manoeuvres, pipes and drums.) (B) DAY 8 SUN - EDINBURGH Today is at leisure. Perhaps trace your family tartan in the Tartan Centre, or tour the art collection in the National Gallery? Tonight we get together for a Highlight Dinner at a local restaurant. (B, HD) DAY 9 MON - EDINBURGH Our tour ends this morning after breakfast. There are complimentary transfers arriving Edinburgh Airport at 06.15 and 09.00. (B)
